Airport Link Project

Ministers letter

Australia's largest tunnelling machines on order for Airport Link

15th August 2008

Part extract

The two largest boring machines to ever operate in Australia moved a step closer to starting work beneath Brisbane streets following the signing of a $90 million contract today.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Infrastructure and Planning Paul Lucas said the signing of the contract between Thiess John Holland and German company Herrenknecht was a major step forward for the massive Airport Link road and tunnel project.

"When complete, this project will allow motorists to bypass 18 sets of traffic lights between Bowen hills and the Airport, cutting the trip to as little as nine minutes,"  Mr Lucas said.

"Combined with the construction of the next stage of the Northern Busway from Windsor to Kedron and the Airport Drive connection flyover this is the biggest road and tunnel project in Australia's history."

Mr lucas said each of the tunnel boring machines would chew through around 85m of rock a week.

"These state-of-the art tunnelling wonders will be specially designed and manufactured in Germany for use on Airport Link."

Mr Lucas said both tunnel boring machines would be launched from Toombul and drill Airport Link's east-west connection to Kedron.

He said the final design for Airport Link featured significantly more tunneling than originally planned, which was good news for motorists and locals alike.

"Using more underground tunnels to build Airport Link reduces the amount of surface works, which means less disruption for local communities and less impact on traffic."

Unlike the North-South Bypass Tunnel, Airport Link has connections going east-west as well as north-south.  And work on the larger and longer tunnel that runs north-south from Bowen Hills to Toombul will start by the end of this year.

"The good news is that BrisConnections believes it can complete work on all three projects by mid 2012 - six months ahead of the State Governments original plans."

Robina Town Centre (Bovis Lend Lease)

Robina Town Centre's $300 million expansion will create one of the Gold Coast's ultimate addresses to shop, play, relax and celebrate.  The centre will be significantly remodelled with the creation of three new malls linking with the existing Arbour Lane, Bazaar Street and the Food Markets for an impressive all-weather shopping experience.  Already boasting the Gold Coast's only David Jones department store,as well as Target, Kmart, Woolworths and Coles, the expanded retail mix will offer the latest-generation, largest-format Big W, a second Woolworths supermarket and around 100 new specialty stores.  Centre Manager Grant Brady says a feature of the expansion will be the development of a landmark entertainment, dining and leisure precinct to be known as the Promenade.  The new Birch, Carroll & Coyle complex will house three Gold Class cinemas, seven state of the art Senstadium cinemas as well as Queensland's first GMAX cinema.  Other proposed features of the Robina Town Centre expansion include a new 900-seat food court with up to 14 dining options, including banquet seating and new childrens interactive playgrounds.

Northern Access Road Project (Leighton Contractors )

1300 LOCATE has a constant presence at B.A.C. and currently holds the majority of locating prospects here.

"Brisbane Airport is a vital piece of public infrastructure serving the interests of the community, business, tourism and government in South East Queensland. As a critical transport hub, Brisbane Airport facilitates the movement of many millions of passengers and tonnes of freight each year.

Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC) as the custodian of Brisbane Airport on behalf of the Australian Government, is required to ensure facilities are developed to meet the current and future needs of South East Queensland. This responsibility means it must put into place appropriate planning, making commitments to upgrade and expand the Airport so that it operates efficiently and has the capacity to cater for its growing number of users.

BAC has committed to implementing a $2.5 billion infrastructure program over the next 10 years which will include new roads, new terminals, a new runway system and the development of aviation-related industry precincts.
The Northern Access Road Project (NARP) will form a major part of this infrastructure program. Once complete, the BAC-funded, five kilometre, multi-lane road will provide Airport users and tenants with a second major access route to the terminals and on-Airport businesses.

The NARP is also integral to the Queensland State Government’s $1.8 billion commitment to road infrastructure in the local region and will connect with the new multi-lane deviation of the Gateway Motorway, from the Gateway Bridge through Brisbane Airport land to rejoin the existing motorway at Nudgee Road.
