Before any excavation work is carried out, the principal contractor for the construction work must:

| 4. Proceed with your project using caution around utilities. |
These key elements complement each other, and all four should be used when working near buried cables and services.
Damage to underground cables can cause fatal or severe injury. Over the years there have been a wide variety of accidents involving contractors coming into contact with underground assets such as explosions from gas mains and even deaths from contact with underground electricity cables. The severity of incidents varies greatly and the financial burden on top is not worth the risk.......$$$,$$$.$$
GUIDELINE FOR UNDERGROUND CABLE LOCATING
Your FREE Dial Before You Dig Plans can give an approximate indication of the underground cables that exist on your site. Some may not even be shown on your plan at all and may very well be under your job site. They are rarely drawn accurately or to scale and should not be relied upon. Companies like Telstra, Optus and even your local council do not have accurate records of utility whereabouts. The position of any underground cable or service in or near the proposed work area should be thoroughly checked by a highly trained and Accredited 1300 LOCATE Underground Cable Locator. Your 1300 Locators vehicle will be stocked with all equipment and devices necessary for them to locate the services in your area of works.
Cable Locating
The 1300 Cable Locator will carry out a brief inspection of your site to determine what hazards might be present, followed by a visual inspection of above ground indicators to determine which underground utilities are present. Combined with the Dial before you Dig plans, our specialised team member will carry out a professional service to mark out all utilities in your works area.
Once utilities have been marked it is good practice to draw up a mud map using landmarks such as back of kerb or pathways etc. or have one of our professionals do it for you while they are on-site. This is a free service. If more permanent markers are needed ask for our potholing teams, they can permanently mark your utilities for the duration of your project .
Vacuum Excavation Pothole and Cable Management
Now that the area has been marked; a Vacuum Excavation unit using water jetting and vacuum can pothole the Cables and Pipes marking there exact location, direction, depth and grouping. They can now be ID Marked using our 1300 Locate Utility Damage Avoidance System, electronically marking and mapping your utilities for automated as-builts and is G.I.S compatible for overlayed onto other mapping software. Now you and your Client will have the exact location of every service on the site and will have no problems finding them again. And the Data is stored with 1300 Locate for future reference if the file gets lost.
